Marriage: Dying to Self

Covenant · October 11, 2026 · Philippians 2:3-11; Ephesians 5:1-2, 25

Big Idea: Marriage is built on oneness, not partnership, and much of its pain comes from insisting on independence inside a covenant of oneness. Jesus, who emptied himself and gave himself up for us, is both the model and the source of self-giving love.

Key Verses: Philippians 2:3-11; Ephesians 5:1-2; Ephesians 5:25; Ephesians 5:31; Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 John 4:19

Start here: What's a household chore you'll happily do, and one you'll avoid at all costs?

Read together: Philippians 2:3-11; Ephesians 5:1-2, 25

The Chisel

In the Text
  1. Read Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4-6. When Jesus is asked about divorce, He goes back to how God made marriage at creation. Why do you think He starts there instead of with the rules of His day?
  2. The clip tells about a polished chisel that got the weeds out but ended up "Mangled, like almost beyond repair." What are some ways people try to use marriage for something it wasn't designed for?

Leaving

The Big Idea
  1. The clip says "the biblical trajectory of marriage is not gaining a son or gaining a daughter, it's losing a son and losing a daughter." In real life, what does it look like when parents and their married kids handle that change well?
  2. The clip warns, "You do tremendous harm to the spiritual reality of your marriage when your family of origin is more important than your spouse." Why can that be so hard to see from the inside?

Partners or One?

The Big Idea
  1. The clip calls this its main point: much of the pain of marriage comes from "pursuing individuality and independence within a covenant that is built on oneness." What does that look like in an ordinary week, with money, time, plans, or friendships?
  2. The clip describes "recruiting my spouse into the building of a personal kingdom of mine." How might a spouse be able to tell they've been recruited instead of loved?

Small Bricks

In Your Life
  1. Read Ephesians 5:1-2. The clip says our sacrifice for one another "becomes a fragrant offering of worship to God." What makes it hard to think of an ordinary chore as worship?
  2. The clip says "big walls get built by small bricks." Which small brick from the clip (the phone face down, their music in the car, the dishes) would mean the most in your home or in a close friendship?
  3. "You're not losing yourself by serving your spouse." Close by praying together. Ask God for one small brick to lay this week, and for eyes to notice the ones other people lay for you.
