Carols of Christmas - O Holy Night
This week we look at the song “O Holy Night.” The song has an interesting history but as the version that we now know and sing, it represents a song of surrender to God and worship.
Along with describing the narrative of Jesus’ birth, it also calls for us to fall down in worship of Jesus our king. Lifting up the baby in the manger and worthy of our devotion. For many of us we would prefer Jesus as anything but King. We would rather he be a friend or a spiritual guru. But like we read in Luke 2:33-35, Jesus is a dividing figure. In 1 peter 2:6-9, Jesus is the a spiritual stone that either is the basis for your life or the stone you trip over.
Finally the song ends with a verse calling us to remember the teaching about love that Jesus gave. Jesus truly taught a law of love (Luke 10:25-28). He also did proclaim freedom to the captives and truly to all those who are on the outside (Luke4:14-30). Jesus came to welcome all into the kingdom, so long as they would follow Him.
